Don’t Call It A Comeback, id’s Been Here For Years

keen.jpgRemember when you could count on a developer's logo as a guarantee of quality? Once was you could pick up a box that said Lucasarts or Origin and just buy it, knowing whatever was inside would kick your tyres AND light your fires. id were on that list too. Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, Commander Keen...all classics.

Then the wheels fell off. The Unreal and later Source engines would cut in on their market share. Quake III was a little underwhelming. Doom 3 and Quake 4 were...well, a bit rubbish. Suddenly id aren't the big players they used to be.

Todd Hollenshead sat down for a chat with Next-Gen in an attempt to remind people that despite their recent setbacks id were still around and still kickin'. Thing is, aside from a refresher that John Carmack is at work on a brand new IP for a brand new iD shooter, we don't get many encouraging signs, just a recap of former glories.

I hope Carmack can pull one out of the bag with this "new shooter". I really do. They've only done three "new shooters" before, and all have kicked ass. But I just don't see them ever clawing back their dominance in the engine market, and as a result, I can't see them returning to their former market-leader status.
