Edge: Rare working on original XBLA game

According to a news article on CVG, the latest issue of the UK’s Edge Magazine contains mention of Microsoft-owned developer, Rare, working on a new and original Xbox Live Arcade title. Holding the reins of the mostly mysterious steed is one Nick Burton, who was previously involved with Starfox Adventures and the more recent Kameo: Elements of Power.
Burton is collaborating with a team of ten others on the unnamed game which may or may not feature disturbingly proportioned, anthropomorphic characters.

PS3: Sexual HD

The PSP’s UMD format became synonymous with pornography. Could PS3 downloads be next? An opportunistic Japanese website called SEXUAL HD (nice Sony-style caps!) is dishing up hi def downloads via the PLAYSTATION 3’s online browser. Offering some very NSFW clips to members, users get access to downloads for one month at 5,000 yen (US $41.40). The site is calling the 1080p optimized vids “next-gen porn.” So, does that make it PORN B3YOND?

N-Gage 2 Semi-Officially, Vaguely Dated

TACOS ARE BACK! YUMMY!
I say semi-officially, because it’s on some Nokia-sponsored Game Arena blog, and vaguely, because it’s only a month and not a hard date. But if you’re scratching little tacos into the wall of your room with a pocket knife, counting down the days until N-Gage 2 is unleashed upon a suspecting and wary public, you’ve got a target: September 2007.
We expect EA Mobile and Gameloft to bring a number of top-selling, award winning titles to our platform between our launch in September and the end of 2007. They aren’t the only ones, as throughout the year we will continue to make exciting announcements of other leading publishers adding their titles to our games catalogue.
Nokia fanboys, commence with the partying.

More Cheap(er) Xbox 360 Games Coming

Xbox Japan rattled the rusty Kotaku mailbox with news that its discount “Platinum Series” would be getting four new games. They are:
- Chromehounds
- Burnout Revenge
- Battlefield 2: Modern Combat
- Perfect Dark Zero
Each will retail for 2,800 yen (US $23) starting March 15th and bring the total discount Platinum titles to nine. Imagine that custom tailored announcements for elsewhere should follow shortly.
Splinter Cell ’spy girl’ a Double Agent, on PS3 & 360
Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Online
Ubisoft has clarified that the Splinter Cell: Double Agent ’spy girl’ multiplayer skin will be available for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. The skin will be included in the PS3 release (scheduled for March), along with a pair of new multiplayer maps and additional co-op challenges. Xbox 360 players will be able to download the skin through an upcoming Xbox Live Marketplace offer.
Ubisoft has yet to confirm the new maps and co-op challenges for Xbox 360, or publicize whether or not the spy girl skin (and any additional content) will be free to download. Given that Microsoft has already invested so much in the franchise, securing a console-exclusive deal for the next Splinter Cell game, our guess is that any new Double Agent content featured in the PS3 version will be eventually offered on Xbox 360 — for a price.

IGN Speculate: No Bongos For Wii

Matt over at IGN has put two and two together to dispel any lingering hopes that the GameCube bongos might make an encore appearance on the Wii for DK Bongo Blast.
Up until recently, people have speculated that Nintendo would make available some bongos for [DK Bongo Blast] so that peeps could best enjoy the experience. But I don’t think so. Why? You’ve got the bongos already: the Wii remote and nunchuk.
Let me be the first to say that, if true, this is a sad, sad decision. I loved those bongos, and while the Wii Remote and Nunchuk might be a ready-made (and cheaper) option for Nintendo, few things in life (if ANY) could beat the feeling of playing a Barry Manilow-esque Zelda theme on a set of plastic bongo drums. In short: don’t cull the bongos, Nintendo.
Here’s hoping that Bongo Blast at least allows people inspired/stupid enough to purchase multiple sets of bongos to use them on this game. I don’t want them to go to waste.

Virtual Console vigilantes gain ground in Super Mario World
Filed under: Retro, Nintendo Wii, Action, Adventure

If you’re the sort of person who leaps out of bed on a Monday morning, filled with the burning desire to rescue something from a perilous situation, you’ll likely find today’s Virtual Console offerings most satisfying. As of 9AM Pacific Time, you should be able to make your way into the Wii shop and start proving that chivalry is far from dead (but possibly overpriced in some cases).
Princess Toadstool will be requiring your services in Super Mario Land State Continent World (SNES, $8), having been kidnapped during her trip to Dinosaur Land — it sounded so inviting! If you haven’t played it before, it’s well worth witnessing Mario’s career shift to Dino-Rider and his expertise in straddling a vicious green beast that devours enemies whole. If that doesn’t hold appeal, a different career of sorts lies in Vigilante (Turbo-Grafx 16, $6), which sees players beating up thugs in New York City in an effort to rescue “the beloved Madonna.”
Finally, there’s Gain Ground (Genesis, $8), a dramatic tale of supercomputers gone rampant and civilians being unjustly imprisoned within war simulations (obviously). It’s just as well that you have an AK-toting guy called “Professor” on your side. Presumably, it’s expected of us to find and rescue the fourth and still missing Virtual Console game for this week.

Clip: THE IDOLM@STER, An Acoustic Cover
Okay, fat man in sunglasses with beard singing: Not funny. Fat man in sunglasses with beard singing “Go My Way” from Xbox 360’s THE IDOLM@STER: Kinda funny. His English message at the end of the song: Hilarious.
Wii Theme Music Up For Grabs

I’m done with Zelda. Wii Sports, too. But sometimes I still turn my Wii on and just leave it there, doing nothing. Idling, if you will. I just can’t get enough of that menu muzak. It SHOULD be corny as all hell, but there’s just something about it that makes it utterly irresistible. Utterly…soothing.
Now it’s in downloadable form. And even truncated to work as a ringtone, if you must. Both the Wii menu and Wii Sports are good to go, and if I may be so bold as to offer a suggestion, “Photo Channel Calm” is just wonderful.

The Sony Super Bowl Party’s Super Schwag

Do anything special for the Super Bowl? Sony Computer Entertainment of America sure as hell did, hosting a big shindig in Miami’s South Beach complete with lasered PS3s and PlayStation Nikes. Only a hundred of these customized packs were on hand to give away. Gotta hand it to Sony — They do know how to throw a party.

And Burning Crusade at #1 surprises…nobody. But Wario Ware at #2? Even a year ago, that would have been unthinkable. Unimaginable, even.

Poke That Bottom!

Making the internet rounds a few years back (and now again), Boonga-Ga Boong-Ga (”Spank ‘Em” in English) is a Korean-made arcade game that was developed specifically for the Japanese market. Players select from eight different characters that include “Mohter-in-law” or “Con artist.” Besides the obvious poking (”kancho”), there is also spanking involved. (Supposedly taking its inspiration from an enema, “to kancho” someone involves clasping your hands together with your pointer extended. Find an unsuspecting buddy and jam your fingers in their pooper while screaming “kancho.” Spend long enough in Japan and eventually you’ll get kancho’d.) Know that in this arcade game, one’s sexual potency is even measured against the impact of the finger against the colon!
