1UP Yanks Neverwinter Nights 2 Review
So the other day, 1UP post a review of a game. No biggie, that's their job. Happens all the time. But their Neverwinter Nights 2 review? Went up, they gave it an awful score (5/10), then it went down and was never seen again. Cue howls of derision from Neverwinter Nights fans and armchair conspiracy theorists alike.
Despite 1UP taking some flak over it, it was in their best interests to take the review, drag it out the back, line it up against the wall then go bury the body in the desert where nobody will ever, ever find it again. Why? It made them look like hacks, which for the most part they most certainly are not. I mean, the thing was barely legible:
But issues exist, and defining them is really no more complex than saying, "Hello D&D superchrome, buh-bye storytelling and character development (you know, those things you're supposed to "immerse" yourself in)." The idea seems to be that we're meant to rah-rah about a superabundance of feats, spells, races, prestige (advanced) classes, and math-equation tickers full of the usual "I attack you with a +4 sword of --" booooooring. Fine, sure, dandy...but when is a "role" not a "role"? Simple: when it's a rule to a fault.
See? Insane.
1UP swiftly apologized, stating "the text of the review did not live up to our editorial standards" and that it was a "disservice to fans of the RPG genre". Both understatements, to be sure, but welcomely frank admissions nonetheless.
While 1Up labour to get a replacement review up, Neverwinter Nights fans itching for some affirmation can check the games Metacritic tally, which as of writing stands at an impressive 88.
