Space Invaders Indie Flick Freaks Me Out

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Courtesy of Destructoid, comes this mind-blowingly strange indie Space Invaders flick. Three letters come to mind watching it: W, T and yes a big, fat, F. I might even throw in a couple of fancy exclamation points.

What the hell is with the voice over? What the hell is with the hair? What the hell is with the kitchen gloves? And just what the hell is with that sock puppet invader in the beggining of this six-minute voyage into bad acting, no plot and, yes, bad lip syncing to an ABBA song.

How can one song attack so many things I love at the same time?

The prodigal webcomic wrapup returns

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

After a week-long hiatus because of in honor of the Tokyo Game Show, the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup has returned to entertain you. As a change of format, this week we’re going to look at some common trends among the gaming comics over the last two weeks.

There have been some notable standouts that we couldn’t categorize. Fanboys nailed an Ocarina of Time / Dance Dance Revolution joke and Press Start to Play took a more self-referential route. Not normally game-related, xkcd and Questionable Content showed their nerd side in more subtle ways.

For the other comics this week, nearly every joke had a counterpart somewhere on the internet channels, so we’re pairing the comics up into teams of two. Tell us, what webcomic duo nailed their respective punch line?

Both Extra Life and Digital Unrest decided to give Wii remotes to animals, hoping for hilarity to ensue.
More topical, the ever-elusive Wii pre-order plan has left Digital Unrest bewildered and Dueling Analogs jaded.
If Mario Hoops has taught us anything, it’s that Ninjas are natural born ballers. Penny Arcade vents its frustration, while Digital Unrest makes one final cameo; why do people think Toad makes a great announcer?
The Tokyo Game Show made few splashes in the world of gaming comics. Penny Arcade explains their reasoning, while Fanboys illustrates the problem with Ken Kutaragi’s keynote.
Don’t ask us why, but Dead Rising is the running gag that never dies (no pun intended). Fanboys domesticate the horror, while VG Cats splices it with Pokemon Snap.
VG Cats and RPG-TV’s Chris Thomas (via a Dueling Analogs guest strip) take jabs at Square Enix’s world — and why not? They’re old enough to take a joke.
Newsflash: people don’t like the new look of Bomberman. Dueling Analogs and RPG-TV report.
Here’s a look at the post-TGS reaction to the PlayStation 3 — both the good (via Penny Arcade) and the bad (via Dueling Analogs).

Famitsu Polls Japanese Retail, Says Wii Wins Xmas

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

WIIIIICash-for-game-reviews sham Famitsu asked Japanese retailers (we assume places like Sofmap, Yodobashi Camera, Laox, etc.) how they thought the next generation of consoles would fare this holiday season. They asked about the ones that matter anyway—PlayStation 3 and Wii. Sure, they threw Microsoft a pity mention, but we can only assume that Takashi Sensui slipped ‘em a 5000 yen note to get it.

Here are the questions, courtesy of GameFront.

1. Which next gen console will, in your opinion, sell better during Christmas?
88% - Wii
11% - PS3

2. With all hardware considered, which console do you expect to sell best after Christmas?
60.7% - Nintendo DS
32.8% - Wii
3.3% - PS2
1.6% - PS3
1.6% - Xbox 360

Well that seems to just about wrap it up for Sony! Let’s hope they can get our of their lease and unload their office furniture on CraigsList.

Funny. Our scientific polling of some 40-odd TGS attendees and cosplayers says the split between those interested in the Wii and the PS3 is closer. But who cares about interest? Not retailers! Considering that Sony will only be shipping 100K units at launch and lord knows how many before we all celebrate Baby J’s birthday, this seems fairly accurate.

Watch Chainsaw, play GearsMicrosoft is launching their Match Made in Hell promotion for Gears of War this week, and what better way to show off the game’s chainsaw bayonet than at an advance screening of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning? On Wednesday (Oct. 4), AMC theaters in New York, Chicago, LA, and San Francisco will be treating select attendees to a bloody big screen demo of Gears. There are only a limited number of tickets available at the official site, but Microsoft is planning additional events before the game arrives Nov. 7.

World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade footage leak

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Whether a new video showing environments and mobs from World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade is authentic or an elaborate mod is up for debate. If it is real than somebody has been naughty and deserves a spanking. A spanking and a hug from all the World of Warcraft players clamoring for more information and footage regarding the upcoming Burning Crusade expansion.

A user created video on GameTrailers apparently reveals environments and mobs from the Burning Crusade’s Outlands. The video explains that the footage was captured by placing the Burning Crusade code onto a private server . There are no NPCs or other bells and whistles in the video because it’s not on a Blizzard server.

So if you feel like being naughty, go take a look. We promise not to tell.

Halo Wars: It’s For the Germans

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Germany is a fine country that makes fine products and has fine people. Though, we would be hesitant to say what would make them happy. (Pictures of Crecente?) Same for Northern Europe. Or heck, even Eastern Europe. We don’t know what they want! A chatty Microsoft exec, though, does. At a post-X06 party, an Xbox Europe bigwig let it slip that the console needs a boost in certain countries. Thus, enter Halo Wars, from the Age of Empires developer. The exec stated:

It’s for the Germans. We think this genre of game is perfectly suited to Germany, northern and eastern Europe. It illustrates our desire to release games that are appropriate for gamers in all markets.

Isn’t he totally contradicting himself?

They Were Wrong: Hands-On With Bully

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Bapenguin over on the Evil Avatar forums has a detailed rundown of his firsthand observations of Bully, Rockstar’s latest attention-getting title.

When Bully was announced back at E3 2005 to a small closed door group of press it immediately garnered a ton of attention. Unfortunately it was the wrong kind of attention with numerous groups and a lawyer that should not be named claiming the game was a Columbine Simulator. These people went as far as saying the game should be cancelled and that it was irresponsible of Rockstar to make such a game. These people are also idiots. They were irresponsible for not getting all the information on this game before making these outrageous claims. Bully is a caricature of boarding school life. Bully is no more a Columbine simulator than robotic crabs are a part of Japanese history.

After reading his full report on the game, I’m well vindicated that the Peaceaholics, the biggest group protesting the release of the game, and their various lawyer and politician chums have egg on their face.

And that’s enough to make me preorder.

eBay Xbox Comes with Bonus Pants

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Tipper Rich has a friend who just grabbed an Xbox off eBay and was blessed with a big fat bonus: free pants and towel!

So I picked up an old Xbox off of eBay. Great price, seller with 100% feedback. Then the box came. This was the packing material.

What should I do with these - what should I do with the Xbox? I mean, would *you* touch any of this?

I dunno why he’s complaining. I spend several hours a week doing through the dumpster behind the subsidized apartment buildings on my block, just hoping for pants like those.

Feature: Marvel, Cryptic and MGS Talk Marvel Universe Online

Friday, September 29th, 2006

By: Brian Crecente
I had a chance recently to speak with Frank Pape, senior director of business development for Microsoft Game Studios, Cryptic Studios’ Jack Emmert and Vice President of Marvel Interactive, Ames Kirshen, about upcoming massively multiplayer online hero-fest Marvel Universe Online.

The game, first announced at ComicCon earlier this year, will be developed by Cryptic Studios, the team behind City of Heroes, for Windows Vista and the Xbox 360 and will support “seamless play” between the two platforms.
Kirshen said Marvel decided to go with Microsoft because they wanted a console publisher who was a first party and had experience with computer games as well.

“It was a natural fit for us,” he said, adding that they are “delighted” to have Cryptic as the developer.
Emmert said that his team at Cryptic Studios has been working on the MMO for awhile now.

” We are focusing on trying to get the action style game play that console players expect and want,” he said. “I really want to create a game that is distinct and unique.”

While the game will allow both Vista and 360 gamers to play on the same server, one version will not be a port of another, Marvel’s Kirshen said.

“Jack’s team is working very diligently to make sure the PC game does not feel like a port of the console or the console is a port of the PC game,” he said. “They are designing the game to be functional and fun. That’s a huge challenge but I can’t think of anyone else who can tackle that.”

I asked the Microsoft Game Studio’s Pape why they would want to get into the massively multiplayer online market when it is currently so dominated by World of Warcraft.

Not only is Microsoft Games not worried about World of Warcraft, Pape said, the game’s tremendous success is one of the motivations for getting into the market.

800px-Marvel-character-composit.jpg

“For us that is the impetus to make this game,” he said. “We have always looked at the space, looked at the Everquests, at the games coming out, the Star Wars Galaxies,” he said. “Ultimately you see a lot of the same things.”

“When you look at it the World of Warcraft, it is a great game, but it has been a black hole, it has subsumed a large part of the audience,” he said. “Marvel breaths fresh breath into the space.”

“We believe that the Marvel IP transcends what you have seen before in this genre and will fresh life into massively multiplayer online games.”

Kirshen added that World of Warcraft taps a very specific fantasy genre.

“If I was working for an IP with a medieval fantasy property it wouldn’t behoove anyone to go out there and be against World of Warcraft,” he said. “But the Marvel Universe is based in the real world of today. Super heroes are a fantasy, but it’s a very different kind of fantasy.”

And, while Marvel hasn’t made any specific announcements about where gameplay might take place, there’s always the possibility it won’t in big cities.

“The Marvel Universe isn’t just super heroes running around in big cities,” he said. “We have Thor and Asgard, we have Atlantis and we have the Midnight Suns and the other dark slices of Marvel.”

800px-Asgard.jpg

That depth is something that Emmert is looking forward to tapping into.

“Our passion for Marvel comics is pretty well known, especially my own,” he said. “We wanted to do this thing because of our love of Marvel comics. The main thing we can’t stress enough is the breadth of the Marvel Universe. Their entire history is at our disposal.”

While Emmert is vocal fan of Marvel, Marvel has not always been a vocal fan of Emmert.

In November, 2004 Marvel Entertainment sued Cryptic Studios and NCSoft, accusing them of designing City of Heroes in a way that allowed gamers to create characters that look like the famed heroes of the Marvel Universe.

When asked about it during my interview, Emmert called the whole thing “water under the bridge.”

“The reality is that was just business, Marvel wants to protect its IP which is terrific,” he said. “They make their living off Spider-Man, Hulk, Wolverine. I appreciate that protection.”

NCSoft, publishers of City of Heroes and City of Villains, declined to comment on the “business dealings of an independent company such as Cryptic Studios.”

They did say that they expect to continue working with Cryptic on developing and maintaining both games.

“NCsoft is committed to delivering to its customers the best games possible and this news from Cryptic Studios should in no way affect the high-quality product that the fans of City of Heroes and City of Villains have come to expect,” they wrote in a prepared statement. “The “City of” franchise recently released its seventh major content update in the summer and the next free expansion is scheduled to be released later this year. Additional details of future plans for City of Heroes and City of Villains have been spelled out by Cryptic’s lead designer, Matt Miller, in an address to the game’s community.”

Robert Garriott, CEO of NCSoft North America, called the City franchise “an exceptional product.”

“City of Heroes and City of Villains have cornered the market on comic-book themed massively multiplayer online games and any competition for this space is several years away,” he wrote, “so these games still have a lot of open field running to do.”

Rainbow Six Vegas PSP Screens

Friday, September 29th, 2006

I am all about new PSP shooters, so Rainbow Six Vegas’ PSP port is intriguing to me. Here’s what Computer and Video Games has to say:

Featuring new content and characters from the next-gen versions, the PSP version is looking stunning. Ubisoft told us that the portable version will feature a “tailored control system built specifically for the system”, which is a given, but didn’t go into further details about what form this would actually take.

In addition to promising a decent control scheme (good luck, I’ve run into very few PSP games that pulled it off), Ubi says there’s going to be online or wireless ad-hoc multiplayer, too.

How to Get (And Lose) Commenting Access on Kotaku

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Just a reminder that our new and mostly improved commenting system now allows anybody to make the leap for that commenting privileges brass ring in the sky.

If you’re not already gifted with the divine right to post comments on Kotaku, just type up your comment in the box at the bottom anyway and then click submit. That should then bring up a little page that lets you choose a username and such.

Once you submit your hopeful comment, it will be shunted away to GawkerHQ where castigated squirrels endowed with super-human intelligence, but lacking the ability to feed or dress themselves, will sort through your missives in an attempt to find something worthy of post-itude.

If deemed worthwhile, and be warned these are some surly squirrels, the post will go live and with it your leap into full commenting privilege.

With this greater chance of getting into the kingdom of Kotaku comes a much greater likelihood of getting booted right back out. Commenting privileges are not something to be taken for granted. If you start filling posts with idiotic ramblings, spam, trolling or things that don’t add anything to the story or conversation, expect to have your login ripped from your clawing hands with zero notice.

The good news is that no banning is permanent, you can always take your chances with those squirrels again.

MGS4 to Include “Real World” People

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Game news site DarkZero reports that Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, is promising “real” people in the 4th game:

At the Tokyo Game Show Hideo Kojima has announced that he plans to include people from the real world in the forthcoming PlayStation3 title, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It is a big change for the series but Kojima-san has refused to reveal any more details on his decision beyond demonstrating how the Japanese actress, Yumi Kikuchi, has been faithfully rendered to be included in the game.

Actors, celebrities, politicians? What’s the deal? This is a vague assertion that implies all sorts of weird things. Me, I immediately imagined sneaking through a throng of Special Service goons and tasering Mr. Bush right in the nunchucks. From underneath a box, of course.

Get Some Early Hands On Time With Gears of War

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Gears of Wars and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning are teaming up to host a joint preview event in four cities across the country on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Thos lucky enough to get stuffed into the participating theaters in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco will get to watch what will likely be an even worse movie than the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and then spend some time playing Gears of War.

While I love the concept of spending a couple of hours chainsaw people to death followed by chainsawing people to death for a couple of hours in a game, I wish Gears of War had picked a better movie to team up with.

If you’re interested and willing to undergo the torment of watching a cheesy movie to play a good game, hit the link and register.
