This Day in Gaming, August 19th

1999: Konami releases Dance Dance Revolution Solo BASS MIX to arcades. Someone needs to install one of these on a big Hummer limo. You'll hear the bass from down the block while you nod your head to the music. Then, a bunch of sweaty, sticky DDR-players roll in. It could be the new Jacuzzi, but without the 80s hair band presence.

2004: Konami releases Genso Suikoden 4 for PS2 in Japan. The game departed from Suikoden standards in terms of the fight system and story to fan dismay. Isn't it interesting that as a society we expect game sequels to be better than originals and movies to be worse? No one would expect much of Lawrence of Arabia 4: Lawrence's Revenge whlie we expect the world from new Marios.

2005: LucasArts announces a new expansion pack, Trials of Obi-Wan, for Star Wars Galaxies on PC. After its November release, programmers announced the "New Game Enhancements" (NGE) - a series of rule changes that fundamentally altered the game. They were so highly contested that LucasArts offered a refund. Of course, it was paid out in Jar Jar action figures.
