The Making Of Nintendo’s “School’s Out”

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Pardon me, weary internet traveller. Can I have seven minutes and thirty six seconds of your time? Cool. I’d like for you to watch this brief behind-the-scenes doc on the making of the instant classic 2003 spot for Nintendo, “School’s Out”, directed (and tipped to us?!) by Anthony Atanasio. You’ve definitely seen it. Everyone has. But you may not be aware that over 500 extras were cast for this ad in the “Who Are You?” campaign and that the stunt coordinator from Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was on hand to keep all nimble, childlike stuntmen in check. It’s a fascinating look at a beautiful commercial that keeps wide-eyed, corn-fed hillbillys like myself in amazement at all the technological gee-whizery.

Thanks for the heads up, Anthony!

Nintendo Sending Out Free Wii Dev Kits?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Just got word of an interesting (and totally unconfirmed) rumor from one of our insiders. It seems that Nintendo is giving Wii development kits to smaller studios. A developer in a big coastal American city apparently received a mysterious package from Nintendo. Office staff, programmers, and even the president weren’t aware what was inside. The box was opened, and viola, Wii dev kit. This could be a ploy on Nintendo’s part to get as many companies working on Wii games as possible. If this is true, it certainly shows Nintendo has improved its stance towards third party studios, as opposed to the iron-fisted days of yore. As I mentioned, this is totally unconfirmed, could’ve been some mix-up or miscommunication on the developer’s end, but it does come from a good source. Do what you will with this tidbit.

A Bit o’ Backstory on the Pac Man Graffito

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Olskoolninja answered my query for information regarding the Jay, Florida Pac Man graffiti, but his evocative reminisces serve only to deepen by curiosity. What do nudists, hurricane victims and the KKK have to do with Pac Man scrawlings?

I’m deeply fascinated now by what I imagine must be a very simple, and probably very boring story.

I grew up in Pensacola, Florida which is right down the road from Jay. I moved away from the area after Hurricane Ivan because my house got messed up really bad, but during high school we would travel to Jay for football games every season. Jay, along with the rest of the northwestern most tip of Florida’s panhandle was hammered by Hurricane Ivan almost three years ago.

Traveling through the area, you’ll see lots of small buildings that were boarded up prior to the storm, damaged during the storm, and never reopened after the storm due to exstinsive roof damage. I’m sure that this strip of storefronts fall into that category. If you notice in the photo, you can see a claw painted there as well, which is part of an artistic representation of the local high school’s mascot. I’m pretty sure that building use to be an grease trap dinner, but I’m not 100% sure.

Jay itself has always been very small community. A majority of its citizens are members of a nudist commune near there. Everyone else are farmers and whatnot. The first season of Road Rules on MTV had the cast visit Jay and the nudist camp. Also, I think historically, Jay was a strong hold for the area’s branch of the KKK.

Proving once again that video games are essentially racist.

I love this shit, don’t you? Gives me a sort of false-nostalgic tingly feeling of strange places and curious happenings. Thanks, Olskool.

Film Your Own Elf Porn, Win Big Prizes

Friday, July 28th, 2006

In-game matchmaking software company Xfire is teaming up with Blizzard in a promotional contest for the best World of Warcraft machinima. Grand prize is $23k, which is approximately a 127-year WoW subscription.

The objective of the contest is to select the best fan-made movies using World of Warcraft characters and locations - an increasingly popular area of amateur film-making known as machinima.

Contestants are invited to submit entries in four categories - short film, comedy, drama/action and dance/music video - with the criterion being that they must all be cut together from footage recorded in World of Warcraft.

The deadline is September 15th, so get cracking. There are also a butt-ton of runner-up prizes, so even if your sweeping epic about the shocking sexual exploitation of the Orgrimmar Orphanage doesn’t top the list in the Music Video category, you still have a whack at some nice plunder.

EA Not Such Slave Drivers Anymore?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Erin Hoffman, the original EA Spouse, is quoted in an article about BECTU’s quest to unionize gamedevs saying that she thinks the lawsuits against Electronic Arts have changed the company for the better.

Ms Hoffman said the EA lawsuits had prompted a big improvement at the company.

She said: “EA in Los Angeles has completely turned around its work practices. They have an agreement in place never to work on Sundays.

“People there are very happy now. They are still producing games on time and getting good reviews.”

The rest of the article speaks generally about the poor working conditions at many game companies, and what entertainment union BECTU hopes to do about it.

Look At What Yummy My DS Taught Me to Cook!

“The necessary ingrediants to prepare okonomiyaki may be more difficult to aquire than you’d like. So, I’m going to assume you don’t have them and give you a full okonomiyaki recipe from scratch instead of relying on the store bought okonomiyaki sauces, etc.

Serves 3-4:

First to make the okonomiyaki sauce, combine:

1/4 cup Ketchup
1 1/2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoons of Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons of Sake (or Rice Vinegar if you don’t have Sake on hand)
And Soy Sauce to your taste preference (around a tablespoon or two)

in a saucepan and simmer over low heat stirring constantly. Take it off after a minute and let cool while you prepare the rest of the okonomiyaki.

For the rest you’ll need:

2 Eggs
1 cup White Flour
1 cup Water
2 tablespoons of Sake (or again, Rice Vinegar)
2 cups of Shredded Cabbage (which you can buy packaged, though it is suggested you shred it yourself*)
1/4 cup of Shredded Carrot
4 Whole Scallions, cut into small lengthwise strips (about 1″ - cut down the length of the Scallion, twice so it’s in quarters and then cut horizontally to make one inch strips. If it’s a large scallion, you may wish to cut into eighths)
1/4 cup Vegetable Oil
1/2 cup Cooked Shrimp (if not of the smaller variety, slice down the spine to cut in half and to make the shrimp thinner and easier to put in a pancake-like okonomiyaki. This is really up to taste preference, but you can also cut them in half again - down the middle to cut down the size but not make them thinner)

Now that you have those, start by mixing the two eggs in a large bowl. Then add the flour and water part by part until you’ve mixed them all into a pancake batter consistancy. (This step, again, is up to taste preference. You might prefer a pinch more flour to make the pancake easier to flip and to absorb more sauce when completed.) Also add the sake at this stage and (should you prefer cooking all foods with salt - I don’t) you may also add a pinch of salt.

Next, fold in the carrots, cabbage, and scallions (Stop using your whisk and get something heavier out!). Once the batter is even, you can start cooking!

Using a pancake grill (or, lacking that, a large frying pan) coat the surface in vegetable oil and pour about half a cup of batter onto the grill. You’re aiming for 4″ to 6″ in diameter as these okonomiyaki will be easier to flip/handle this way. You can, of course make them larger, but you’ll need some practice and a good spatula for that.

Once the okonomiyaki batter is on the grill (or in the pan) add 1/4 of the shrimp to the top.

(OPTIONAL STEP: If you have access to Katsu-bushi - scaled Benito flakes - now is the time to add them over the shrimp. Be generous as the flakes will create a really nice crispy ‘crust’ once turned over onto the pan.)

Anyway, over medium heat, cook the okonomiyaki until lightly browned on one side before flipping over. A good general indicator - aside from the formation of bubbles on the top like with pancakes - is that the okonomiyaki will solidify and become easier to lift off the grill over time. Should be about be about two to three minutes depending on the heat.

You may also press down lightly with a spatula from time to time to ensure an even cook.

Once both sides are done, simply drizzle the sauce over the okonomiyaki either on a plate or still warm on the grill and then serve immediately.

(OPTIONAL STEP: Some people - like me - prefer a thin layer of mayo before the okonomiyaki sauce. This will depend on if you have a brand that approximates the taste of the common Japanese mayo brand, which is perfect for this and takoyaki.)

(OPTIONAL STEP: If you have access to Nori - dried seaweed sheets - you may wish to have these shredded into thin strips and lightly toasted as you can add them to the top of the okonomiyaki after the sauce.)

Last step: Enjoy!

Hope this has been helpful, kamu.

*Shredding the cabbage is like the soul of okonomiyaki. Depending on how you do this, the consistancy of the entire okonomiyaki will change. My suggestion is to take a full cabbage and cut it in half. Then cut it into quarters. Take each quarter and starting from the side (NOT the small pointy end, but the side lengthwise) carefully shred the cabbage into thin strips. Then cut the strips once down the middle to make 1″ to 1 1/2″ strips perfect for a large okonomiyaki.”

Think the PS3 Is Expensive? Go to Israel

Sony: DS Lite Is No Concern

“Regarding bashing all corporations equally:

During the PS1’s and PS2’s glory days, I bashed Nintendo over the following:

1) The firing of Gumpei Yokoi
[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gumpei_Yokoi]

2) The termination of Star Fox 2

3) The push for Cartridge-based data storage whilst all their developers wanted optical storage(see next point)

4) The blatant disregard of their third parties(which cost them biiig time)

5) Donkey Kong Country

6) Some of their patent trolling dealing with emulation.

7) Releasing games and only cosmetic changes to the GameBoy almost a DECADE after it was released(forget the car crash, after this and the Virtual Boy, Gumpei probably HariKaried himself)

8) Beating those poor dead horse franchises to mud with laughable unoriginal adaptations(with a few exceptions, Mario64 is still awesome)

So I did my share of Nintendo bashing. Now I’m bashing Sony. Here’s why:

1) Sony rootkit fiasco. I’m sorry, this alone makes them a bunch of motherfuckers.

2) PS2 hardware issues and Sony’s inability to actually admit they screwed up.

3) Sony’s patent trolling for things regarding emulation.

4) Sony’s unoriginal beating to death franchises.

5) Their press conferences where they insult and or spout ignorant nonsense,

6) Theu intentionally offensive advertising.

7) They are a member(one could say THE member) of the RIAA…nuff said.

8) BlueRay spec has a kill switch on Sony’s end(I think you pirate, thus I destroy you expensive box)

9) PSP is not a games machine. I sold mine and am happy about it.

10) Laughable ideas/conferences on the PS3 and how people will want what Sony wants them to want.”

Tim Schafer Shows Us How to Do That

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Tim Schafer seems smart. Like, really smart. I am extremely impressed with the very simple, very true little bombs he drops over and over in this recorded lecture from GDC 2004.

Yeah, it’s long. But for anyone interested in creating any sort of fictional experience, be it games, movies, books or Crecente/Bashcraft slashfic (we call it Bashfic), this will be a valuable hour and five minutes for you.

A very few of the many points Schafer makes about creating good characters:

  • Characters should be wish fulfillment. This doesn’t mean they can’t be goofy, or nerdy, or losers. There are lots of ways to make characters that are fun to play. Guybrush might not be a badass, but he always has a comeback.
  • Create supporting NPCs as you would the ideal road trip buddies. Making them annoying, offputting, needlessly stupid or generally hateful and then sticking the player with them through the whole game is just sadistic.
  • Write the PC as you would a character in a movie, a character that a good actor would jump at playing.

More after the jumpasaur.

  • Backstory. Making up pasts for every single one of your characters, big ones or not, makes it insanely easy to imbue them with neat little traits by pulling from the past you’ve created.
  • Steal stuff, but steal it right. Steal stuff from life, especially. From your own life, from your friends’, from crazy things hobos tell you on the street. And steal stuff from other fiction, but don’t steal the surface junk. Steal what makes good things good. So if you’re stealing from GTA, stealing the hookers and mobsters and violence is missing the point. Steal the fun, the open-ended gameplay, the facetious attitudes.

I’m taking better notes on this speech than I ever did on anything in the history of my school career, so I’ll stop. Just give it a listen; even if you aren’t a creator this will give you a whole new way to look at and appreciate games.

CNET Has No Idea What “Vaporware” Means

Friday, July 28th, 2006

CNET has a bizarre little slideshow of the top-eleven vaporware titles, with the mysterious inclusion of those who are no longer vaporware (Prey is #3). I think someone is confused about the definition of “vaporware”, despite the literal definition being pasted above the article itself.

Here’re their complete picks:

  1. Duke Nukem Forever
  2. The Phantom Game Console
  3. Prey
  4. Starcraft Ghost
  5. Sam and Max: Freelance Police (listed as cancelled…whuh?)
  6. PlayStation 3 (say what?)
  7. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (this is getting ridiculous)
  8. Team Fortress 2 (jesus christ)
  9. Fallout 3 (I actually hope this is true; I don’t want to see Bethesda fuck my sunshine on this one)
  10. Earthbound 64/Mother 3

In fact, I think the only actual vaporware items on that list are the Phantom, DNF, and maybe Fallout 3. Although the latter doesn’t really count because it hasn’t been cancelled or delayed; it’s barely even been announced. Get the fuck out of my comic book shop, CNET.

See list here [CNET, not sure where I got this link]

Familiar voices on The Escapist’s podcast

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Filed under:

The Escapist, the weekly gaming web-mag, has dropped the “ist” for their just launched podcast dubbed “Escape Radio.” What you’d think would be full of erudite discussions on various facets of MMOs, text adventures, MMOs, sex in games, and MMOs turns out to be full of the stuff we all like to hear about. Y’know, the talk of the week like the ATI/AMD union and, yes, Wii jokes (’cause it sounds like wee!).

Who do we have to thank for this production? The former co-hosts of the excellent Gamers with Jobs Radio, a podcast that we pimped at this very site less than a year ago. Like lost pets in a Hollywood movie, hosts Russ Pitts and Shawn Andrich have found their way home, a return to form, despite the new parentage and new RSS feed. We’ve added this to our regular podcast lineup, right where GWJ Radio used to be.

Unload on dinos in Jurassic Rage

Jurassic Rage - an Unreal 2004 mod
Far Cry
got a dinosaur mod a few years ago, now Unreal Tournament 2004 gamers have an impending dino crisis on their hands. Jurassic Rage is a new team deathmatch mod that features an objective-based co-op mode, RPG-style character attributes, and a certification system to enhance your player proficiencies. There are a few dinosaur models at the mod’s official site, but right now it’s all about the weapons. Beretta PX4 Storms, Mac 10s, and 18-inch machetes highlight the growing arsenal you will use to take down the opposing team and some hungry prehistoric predators.

Jurassic Rage will also be ported to Unreal Tournament 2007, although there are no release dates mentioned for either version.

RUMOR: Tim Burton To Direct Grim Fandango; Uwe Boll Weeping Softly

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Jesus creeping crap, how did I miss this? I blame you, lazy tipsters! It’s only thanks to Elias of North93.com that this got through the heavily-landmined zone of terror in front of Kotaku HQ at all.

According to Playfuls.com, Burton was quoted thusly on “a film blog”:

Well, I’m currently working on Sweeny Todd , which will be released in mid-2007. After that, I’m going to start working on a new script that was sent to me recently: Grim Fandango. It sort of follows the style of The nightmare before Christmas and Corpse Bride. It’s about a surreal land of the dead, some sort of purgatory where everyone goes when they die. In that place, dead people have to make a four-year transition before they can rest in peace for all the eternity. I still don’t know when we’re going to start filming this, though.

To stave off my rising and inexplicable craving for potstickers, I’ll throw some key phrases into Google and see what I get. Ah ha, Gamespot reported on this around the same time the Denzel Halo rumors were getting started. They’re just as confused as I am, and complain:

The problem is, the “interview” was actually a collection of quotes lifted from other press outlets. While several of the early quotes could be traced to this About.com interview with Burton, several of the others–including the Grim Fandango quote–remain of indeterminate origin and are therefore unverifiable.

That’s a fat, sweaty maybe, leaning towards “nope”, but I’ll go ahead and be pleased anyway. A Tim Fandango would suit me fine.

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Over the past week, Ireland has been home to some depressingly nice weather. Cerule, cloudless skies and temperatures in the high 70’s have found me basking in the sunshine like a gecko in my backyard until almost 11pm, which is sunset around this time of year.

Needless to say, I’m sick to fucking death of it. Good weather puts a great deal of pressure on someone like me to spend time outdoors, curled up with a good book, drinking a beer. It takes me away from vices like gaming. And just when I have Dragon Quest VIII spinning idly in the PS2, just waiting for my attention.

Luckily, the sky is grey and dour right now. I would like nothing better than a weekend of rumbling thunder and downpour, so I can guiltlessly tuck away into a gaming weekend.

You know the drill: this is your thread to tell us what you’ll be playing, to brag about new purchases, to crow about virtual victories. Make the jump and join in!

Good thing our sponsors coached us all week long, teaching us how to hold the wheel and hang a three-point turn. More Details on the Secret Wii Tour

Friday, July 28th, 2006

More Nintendo Wii goodness has drifted my way via the ephemeral rumor mill. Yesterday, I posted rumors of a secret Wii tour set to storm the nation and convert heathen next-geners to the way of the Wii.

Some intriguing new details have surfaced since.

Apparently, instead of taking the form of a barnstorming, whistle-stop tour of the nation’s top cities, the Wii tour is going to be something more akin to the Fight Club.

Don’t worry you’re not going to have to bloody your nose or sell rich people their fat back to them, but you’re probably not going to know when the thing breezes through your town unless you make the list.

Nintendo is going to compile some magical list of “influencers” (think alpha soccer moms and gamers, not bloggers and journalists) and invite them to a secret meet up with the Wii.

Once there, the lucky few will get some hands on time with the console and fall deeply in love with it… or be beaten to death by a sack of Wii-motes and their bodies fed to ravenous Pokemon.

Remember the first rule of the Wii Club…

Aqua Torque: A Ziplock Bag for Your DS Lite

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Introducing the most half-assed DS Lite accessory of all time: The Aqua Toque. As you can see, it is a Ziplock bag into which you insert your DS Lite, much like frozen chicken or leftover pizza. The aim is to protect the DS Lite from dirt and moisture, so if you’ve ever been looking for something that will allow you to hurl your DS Lite dramatically into the toilet, this is your accessory.

To slightly distract you from the fact that they are charging $6 for a product you can pick up at the local 7-11 by the dozen for half the price, the Aqua Toque comes in numerous pastel colors.

The English translation of the homepage is almost worth six bucks in and of itself: “Aqua Toque use method. [chapter of bathroom] saying that ‘DS training of the adult that strengthens the brain’ ‘Cram School’ and ‘English pickle’” I would kill to play the games Cram School and English Pickle, wouldn’t you?

Scarface joins next-gen cancellation list

Friday, July 28th, 2006

It’s hard out there for a gangsta. After the Sopranos just got the next-gen axe, Scarface follows suit and blows up plans for an Xbox 360 release. According to GameSpot, Vivendi has just announced that any chance for a 360 release is dunzo, but to make up for it, a PSP iteration of the game will come out this fall.

While it’s true the developers have been very mum on the next-gen version (in fact when we played the game not too long ago, they had told us there wouldn’t be one), it was announced back in 2005 that it was considered. Well now it’s official, no next-gen version.

What’s going on here people? Are we really starting to see the effects of large budgets for next-gen games exploding in developer’s faces? Somewhere, a Nintendo exec is laughing.
