Silent Hill Hits DVD, PSP, Blu-Ray August 22

Remember Silent Hill the movie? The disaster of a horror flick that I spent good money on, seeing it in the theater twice? Well, apparently now they’re going to release this thing into the wild, on multiple digital formats for your reviewing/recoiling pleasure. The DVD version hits August 22nd for an MSRP of $28.95, with cursed Sony-backed formats UMD and Blu-ray hitting the same day. The Blu-ray disc is going to set you back a cool $38.95, for extra regrettability. Of course, no one pays MSRP, so expect this to come in a little lower at your retailer of choice.

Special features for the DVD disc include a six-part production diary, focusing on:

If I did actually pick this up, it would only be to fast-forward to the mangled busty nurse bits. Anyone out there seriously considering adding this to their library?

Transformers: The Movie: The Game Hits “Day And Date” Of Film

So not the new movie posterAmid the feel good news that Hollywood and the video game industry benefit from eachother comes this little nugget of news: The Transformers video game—the one based on the upcoming Michael Bay movie, not a re-issue of the previous capable Transformers game—will hit stores the same day the movie hits theatres. For those of you keeping score, thats July 4th of 2007.

The game will be coming courtesy of Digital Domain, a production house recently purchased by Mr. Bay’s Wyndcrest Holdings, LLC. They’ll apparently be “sharing assets” with the film crew, so expect the game to stay true to the film from a visuals standpoint.

I’m nervously excited about the prospect of a live action Transformers flick, but this is Michael Bay we’re talking about here.

Games of the Week: The Lower Depths

LOTR BME IIApparently publishers don’t want to ship software in the middle of summer, especially on an American holiday synonymous with being outside, because this week’s releases run from pathetic to “huh?”. There is one big game hitting this week, see if you can figure out which one it is!

The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II (Xbox 360)
EA brings us the real time strategy sequel to the previous movie licensed title. Now with new playable races and new online modes.

Kitty Luv (PC)
Feed, groom, and care for your kitties, then pit them against eachother in a brutal fight to the death. Just kidding about that last part.

Ruff Trigger: The Vanocore Conspiracy (PS2)
You’re an anthropomorphic furry on a mission to save cute lil’ piggies! Yay!

Glory of the Roman Empire (PC)
Two things: A game that focuses first and foremost on FUN! Superbly accessible game with an elegant, highly intuitive “flower” interface! Wow!

Sorry, kids. I just can’t bring myself to waste your time with all the other shovelware. Let’s all just enjoy our holidays with our copies of Gradius Collection, mkay?

Roll Back Your PSP To Its 1.5 Glory

psp_downgrader.jpgHomebrew fans rejoice! The PSP hacking scene has released a firmware downgrader, one that will make your 2.60 or 2.50 PSP a homebrew friendly 1.5. Word of warning though, if you are the owner of a particular model PSP, or can’t follow written instructions, your PSP could become a brick. Use this with caution.

The PSP homebrew scene is very strong, with some solid emulators already in the wild, with the promise of more and better software coming at a steady rate. Risk takers with an interest in playing SNES games on their PSP should take note of this very important release.

Edge, DMA Reflect On The Making of GTA

Okay, its GTA2, but c'monThe first Grand Theft Auto for the PlayStation and PC was not the runaway success or critical hit that many gamers associate with the third proper entry in the series. Nor was it easy to create. In Edge Online’s digital version of the print pub’s latest “Making Of” feature, DMA’s Brian Baglow recalls: “I sat through heated design meetings, which resulted in tears. Screaming, punches and arguments were common.” Awesome.

The article has a ton of great trivia, insight into the game development process, and copious amounts of what could have been’s. And, hey, after all that reminiscing, don’t forget that the subject of said write-up is still available as a free download from Rockstar.

Wii launch date Nov. 6 says SI for Kids

Perhaps not the most natural place you’d find such a scoop, but according to the latest issue of Sports Illustrated for Kids the launch date for the Nintendo Wii is November 6. As proof, someone was kind enough to send Go Nintendo some blurry pics of the issue with the release date included. As if that weren’t enough, the site Cubed3 is reporting that an unnamed “industry source” has said the same date.

According to this “source”: “So, at the moment Nintendo are aiming to launch the Wii on November 6th.”

Now, the Cubed3 thing is a bit of a stretch, to say the least, but seeing the date in print for a somewhat reputable publication is another thing. There has yet to be official word, but November 6 would make sense for Nintendo, who’s looking to hit shelves before the PlayStation 3.

[Thanks, Alexis]

Suspected Canadian Terrorist “Obsessed” With Halo

Totally FarooqedYou don’t have to go to a prestigious law school, say, for instance, Vanderbilt University, to know that playing video games leads normally healthy teens and young adults to commit horrible acts of violence. Execution style shootings, the bludgeoning of a houseful of sleeping innocents with aluminum baseball bats, the snapping of necks of toddlers with bright futures, all commonplace for owners of a PlayStation 2. But are you aware of the deadly link between playing Halo and pushing a militant Islamic agenda to the point of plotting a series of truck bombings in the greater Toronto area?

Apparently there is some sort of nebulous relationship between the two, one that the Chronicle Herald of Halifax, Nova Scotia sees fit to report on. See?

In early 2004, [suspected terrorist and LiveJournal-calibre poet Zakaria] Amara’s major preoccupation in life was a hugely popular, shoot-em-up video game called Halo — a game he would forgo polite conversation to play, according to thousands of Internet postings uncovered by the Globe.

Forgoing polite conversation should have been our first warning! That’s only two steps away from stockpiling truckloads of fertilizer and remote triggering devices.

Who would have thought that a member of the mainstream media would attempt to make a connection between being entertained by a first person shooter set in space and a suspected ring of 12 terrorists hellbent on wishing death and destruction? Still, the Chronicle does mention the following potential link to his criminal behavior:

Amara had just married a woman whose own take on Islam was often far more extreme than his own, and his own attitudes soon began to shift, the postings suggest.

Hmph! Women! Clearly this is our nation’s, nay, our world’s, biggest problem, not video games. Your suggestions about what we can do with all these wimmens would be greatly appreciated.

Report says terror suspect was video-game obsessed teen (Thanks for the tip, Dorcas!)
